The house was built by his father Robert, a wealthy doctor and speculator in the Industrial Revolution. In recent years, the house has been used as offices for the District Valuers.

Unfortunately, public access is currently very limited as it is a working environment and creates too much disturbance to the workforce.

The Darwin Birthplace Society with the support of Shrewsbury & Atcham Borough Council is exploring the possibility of acquiring the property for restoration and conversion into a visitor attraction.

The plan is to utilise the ground floor, courtyard and outbuildings to create a stimulating visitor experience that looks at Darwin's early developemnt and the influences that helped shape his perspective and inform his thinking.

Peter Boyd, Shrewsbury Museums Collections Manager has written a paper on the Darwins in Shrewsbury.
